Your Guide to Getting a California CCW
Getting your California CCW doesn't have to be confusing. Follow these simple steps to get started.
Step 1 – Learn the Basics
If you're new to firearms, start with one of our Introduction to Firearms classes or schedule a private lesson. You'll learn firearm safety, how handguns work, proper handling, and the fundamentals of shooting before beginning the CCW process.

Many issuing agencies make it clear that the CCW course is not a beginner training class—it's a qualification course. Building your skills beforehand will help you feel more confident and better prepared for your CCW qualification.

Step 2 – Find the Right Firearm
Not every handgun is right for every shooter. Before making a purchase, try different makes and models.
That's exactly why we created our Try Before You Buy Fun Shoot. It's a great opportunity to shoot a variety of California-compliant handguns before making your decision.

Step 3 – Find Out Who Issues Your CCW
Your issuing agency depends on where you live.
Common issuing agencies include:

-
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)
-
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD)
-
Riverside County Sheriff's Office
-
Orange County Sheriff's Department
-
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department
-
San Diego County Sheriff's Office
-
Your local police department
Los Angeles County can be a little tricky.
Depending on your address, you may need to apply through LAPD, LASD, or your local police department.

Step 4 – Complete Your Application
Once you've identified your issuing agency, complete the online application and submit all required documentation, such as:

-
Government-issued ID
-
Proof of residency
-
Live Scan fingerprints
-
Any other documents required by your issuing agency
Note: Every issuing agency has its own application process, fees, and requirements. Be sure to review your issuing agency's instructions carefully before submitting your application.
Step 5 – Wait for Your Interview
After your application is submitted, your issuing agency will review it and contact you with the next steps, including your interview.

Processing times vary by issuing agency. Be sure to monitor your email and phone for updates. Some agencies may call from a private or unknown number. Follow any instructions they provide.

Note: This is a great time to continue training with the firearm(s) listed on your application and the gear you plan to carry every day. The more familiar you are with your equipment before your CCW course, the more confident and prepared you'll be.
